Don Quichotte (1976), 56’26

Musical suite in five scenes evoking some aspects of the daily life of a contemporary Don Quixote.

- Prologue (Prologue). A long prelude situates the hero in the face of the aggressions of the present world: pollution, noise, war, vulgarity, profit.

- Moulins à vent (Windmills). An electronically modulated zither in a synthesizer sets the battle against the windmills. The regular pulse is broken by electronic sounds.

- Devise avec Sancho Panza (Chat with Sancho Panza). Sancho's reflection begins with a monologue on double bass followed by a confused discourse with his master.

- Dulcinée du Toboso (Dulcinea del Toboso). After a short, concrete and chaotic journey, Don Quixote meets his “Lady” again to the sound of the orchestra's violins. Their meeting ends in the bullring of Pamplona.

- Combat contre le Chevalier de la Blanche Lune, maladie et mort (Fight against the Knight of the White Moon, illness and death). Instruments, concrete sounds and metal sheets symbolise Don Quixote's final struggles.

The theme of “Don Quixote” allowed me to move from one musical genre to another. Electroacoustic techniques helped me by adding their own insanity to mine.

Jean Schwarz (1939-)

Jean Schwarz, born in 1939, is an “elder” of INA grm.
In his career he has composed for the shows of Carolyn Carlson, Maguy Marin, Larrio Ekson, Françoise Dupuy, Serge Campardon, Petrika Ionesco, Bartabas, for the cinema: the films of J.-L. Godard, S. Moati, G. Blain, A. Resnais, A. Cavalier... and has collaborated with many jazz musicians.
Co-author with André Francis of the record boxes “Trésors du Jazz” and “Jazz Characters”, 500 CDs “Le Chant du Monde” 2002-2010.

Don Quichotte (1976), 56’26

Suite musicale en cinq tableaux évoquant quelques aspects de la vie quotidienne d'un Don Quichotte contemporain.

- Prologue. Un long préambule situe le héros face aux agressions du monde actuel : pollution, bruits, guerre, vulgarité, profit.

- Moulins à vent. Une cithare modulée électroniquement dans un synthétiseur situe le combat contre les moulins à vent. La pulsion régulière est cassée par des sons électroniques.

- Devise avec Sancho Panza. La réflexion de Sancho commence par un monologue à la contrebasse suivie d'un discours confus avec son maître.

- Dulcinée du Toboso. Après un court voyage concret et chaotique, Don Quichotte retrouve sa “Dame” au son des violons de l'orchestre. Leur rencontre se termine aux arènes de Pampelune.

- Combat contre le Chevalier de la Blanche Lune, maladie et mort. Instruments, sons concrets et tôles symbolisent les dernières luttes de Don Quichotte.

Le thème de Don Quichotte m'a permis de passer d'un genre musical à un autre. Les techniques électroacoustiques m'ont aidé en ajoutant leur propre démence à la mienne.
