Quatre Vingts (1987/89), 62'19

At the end of the eighties, it seemed interesting to me to draw a sound image of our time, as the photographer might do. The point was not to give any judgment or to be sermonizing, it might have been artless and vain. This piece is only the subjective look of our surroundings and the sound pollution, such as pictures taken through a certain angle. With modesty, I wish that these passed years should be reminded when this work is listened to.

Vent d'est 18'48
The murdered hope in may 1989 sprang up again during fall, then in winter. The bells from Prague, silent since ages, ranged again in November blowed by the perestroika wind. There is an adagio followed by a rhythmic part in this movement. Orchestra and church bells pulse this first part crossed by choir elements treated as for a requiem. The rhythmic part is built around several ostinatos with many accumulations of several materials in which run hymns fragments.

Kind of 6'09
Some recent plagues reflect our consumers society: benefit, unemployment, gallup polls, communication. We must state that during the passed ten years, we attended their rise following an exponential curve. For the musician, it is the delight of new technologies where fascination and despair keep close, for all the equipment gets out of date very soon. This movement anticipates future disillusions bounded to the choice offered by the multiplicity of synthesizers, samplers, micro-computers, midi devices...

Shit FM 7'35
The saddest invention for music is truly the rhythm machine box with all the sound pollution it has generated. It is even worse to bear it through a neighboor's walkman.

At the very beginning there was the blues reminded us Duke Ellington.

Y a pas d'quoi-plus jamais ça. 10' 17
One has to make weapons, this allows employments. One has to sell them to get foreign currencies. One has to use them, then make war. All political speeches are connected to that point; anyway no one denies it. Nazism remembrance is not so far; Shoah, Holocaust, “The Sorrow and the Pity” broadcasting on TV stood out the latest years. As stated by J.-L. Godard, our TV managers ought to broadcast these films every month. Unless the audience should be taken into consideration...

Tchernobyl 12'25
We avoided the final solution, but for how long? A song of hope from all countries raises up and the future belongs to Cinderella's children. The mountbank I am suscribes to a rather pessimistic vision due to the actual conjuncture, to the audiovisual anarchy we live in and to this rulers utopia definitely willing to make profit out of research and creation.

Jean Schwarz, born in 1939, is an “elder” of INA grm.
In his career he has composed for the shows of Carolyn Carlson, Maguy Marin, Larrio Ekson, Françoise Dupuy, Serge Campardon, Petrika Ionesco, Bartabas, for the cinema: the films of J.-L. Godard, S. Moati, G. Blain, A. Resnais, A. Cavalier... and has collaborated with many jazz musicians.
Co-author with André Francis of the record boxes “Trésors du Jazz” and “Jazz Characters”, 500 CDs “Le Chant du Monde” 2002-2010.

Quatre Vingts (1987/89), 62'19

En cette fin des années 80, il m'est apparu intéressant d'esquisser une imagerie sonore de notre époque comme le fait le photographe. Il ne fut pas question de porter de jugement ou d'essayer de prêcher une bonne parole, c'eût été naïf et vain. Cette pièce n'est qu'un reflet subjectif de ce qui nous environne et nous pollue auditivement, telle une série de clichés pris sous un certain angle. Modestement, je souhaiterais que l'écoute de ce travail nous rappelle autant par le fond que par le contenu ces dernières années. Six mouvements composent l'ensemble.

Vent d'est — 18'48
L'espoir assassiné en mai a rejailli à l'automne puis au cours de l'hiver 89. Les cloches de Prague muettes depuis des lustres ont tinté à nouveau en novembre poussées par le vent de la perestroïka. Ce mouvement comprend un adagio suivi d'une partie rythmique. Cloches d'orchestre et cloches d'églises pulsent la première partie traversée par des éléments de chœurs mixtes traités comme pour un requiem. La partie rythmique est construite autour de plusieurs ostinatos sous forme d'accumulation de différentes matières où circulent des bribes d’hymnes.

Kind of — 6'09
Certains fléaux récents sont le reflet de notre société de consommation : profit, chômage, sondage, communication. Il faut bien constater que nous assistons depuis dix ans à leurs envolées suivant une courbe à croissance exponentielle. Pour le musicien, c'est l'enchantement des nouvelles technologies où voisinent la fascination et le désespoir, car tout le matériel devient obsolète du jour au lendemain. Ce mouvement anticipe les désillusions futures liées aux choix que pose la multiplicité des synthétiseurs, échantillonneurs, micro-ordinateurs, machines MIDI, etc.

Shit FM — 7' 35
La plus triste invention pour le musicien est certainement la boîte à rythme avec toute la pollution sonore qu'elle a suscitée et favorisée. Il est encore bien pire de la subir à travers le “walkman” du voisin.

Au commencement était le blues a rappelé Duke Ellington.

Il faut fabriquer des armes, cela crée des emplois. Il faut les vendre pour faire rentrer des devises. Il faut les utiliser, donc faire la guerre. Tous les discours des politiques se rejoignent à ce sujet ; en tout cas aucun ne l'infirme.
Le souvenir du nazisme n’est pas si loin : Shoah, Holocauste, la diffusion télévisée du “Chagrin et la Pitié” ont marqué ces dernières années. Comme le souligne J-L. Godard, nos directeurs de chaînes devraient les diffuser tous les mois. À moins qu'il ne faille se soucier de l'audience...

Tchernobyl — 12'25
La solution finale, nous l'avons évitée, mais pour combien de temps ? Un chant d'espoir de tous les pays s’élève et l'avenir appartient aux enfants de Cendrillon. Le saltimbanque que je suis souscrit à un certain pessimisme dû à la conjoncture actuelle, à l’anarchie audiovisuelle que nous traversons et à cette utopie des dirigeants de vouloir à tout prix rentabiliser recherche et création.
